Ad Hoc Fashion

It's that tricky time of year, rather chilly one day, warm the next. Then it rains. Sometimes it's all three in one afternoon.

What to wear?

Littlest started guitar lessons this week. She nagged asked me about it all last year , and I finally succumbed.

We have borrowed a guitar, and if she sticks at it, we will buy her one of her own (secondhand, hopefully). I didn't think to ask the friend from whom we borrowed the instrument whether it had a case. It doesn't. So we carried it to school in my shopping bag.
I know - rock'n'roll.

(I have now sourced a case - also borrowed - because around here, we like to cobble things together in an ad hoc fashion.)

I am hoping hoping hoping Littlest takes to the guitar. I'd love for one of the kids to show some musical talent. And if she could be a rock star and keep me in finery and champagne in my dotage, that would be excellent.

Austin Reed silk dress, cardigan, red flower, most of the bangles and 1970s pendant - charity shopped
Sandals - retail
Cream bracelet - darling Tania
Black heart-shaped ring - Italian Widow Vix
Orange flower - cool Mrs Coconut

Red and gold, a good combination, I think.

Look, I've grown some chillies this year.

Yep, looking pretty smug about that.

In other news;

Sue was blown away by all your positive comments about her poem, and says thanks very much.

Her head has swollen to the size of a large pumpkin with all the compliments, she's going to be unbearable from now on....

She's writing a children's book at the moment, and she's given me a draft of what she has produced so far. I will be reading and critiquing it later, and trying to find something intelligent to say other than wow, it's bloody fantastic.

This week saw my annual Give Pants A Chance event.
I tried, but I looked shit.

I am braving the Wrath of Vix, and saying never again.

Till next time...

1970s peasant blouse and sandals - Ebay
1960-70s suede jerkin - luscious Luce
Linen trousers, 1960s vinyl/tapestry shopper, bangles and necklace - charity shopped
Sunglasses - retail (sale).

We used to have a sex shop in our neighbourhood.
As soon as the kids could read the word toys, questions were asked.
Can we go in that toy shop, Mummy?

It has now closed down, and an electronic cigarette shop has opened in its place, one of many springing up all over the place.

It seems we've had the sex, now we are having our post-coital e-fag.

Bits and bobs from charity shops and Chesterfield flea market (clockwise from top left);
1970s handmade maxi skirt
 groovy 1970s tray
cottons
fishnet tights
1960s Meakin pottery (a quid for the lot from Joe's stall)
1960s fabric.

Can't quite remember what that little lot cost but it was well under a tenner.

Oh, and this.

A small 1960s canister, made by Damel (Spanish, I presume) featuring Don Quixote, accompanied by Sancho Panza while he tilts at windmills.

Who doesn't want their vintage plastic containers decorated with illustrations of 17th Century Spanish fictional characters? I know I do.

I could have washed it before taking the photos, but hey, a bit of vintage grime adds interest.

What else?

Stall holder Joe on Chesterfield market has taken to calling me Myrtle. No idea why.

My mate Jo says it's a euphemism for vagina, but I've never heard of that before. Mind you, there are loads; all those cutesy names because we don't seem to like to use proper words for down there.
Fou fou.
Flower.
Tuppence.
Front bum.

A vagina's a vagina in this house.

On that note - I'm off to cook dinner.
And no, it isn't Fuck Broth.

Metal Guru

I have been inspired by this wonderful 1980s skirt which my awesome friend Sarah gave me, and by gorgeous Joni's post here.

Mix those metals!

Belt - retail (sale)
Charlie (free) and Pillsy (RSPCA)
Brass choker - gift from fabulous Vix
All other necklaces, rings, bracelets, bangles - gifts or charity shopped
Top - charity shop
Boots - Ebay
Skirt, hair flower and gold tone stone ring - gifts from Aunty Sarah

I used to have A Rule about not wearing silver and gold together, but in the spirit of adventure, I've chucked that one out.

Yeah, cos I'm crazy like that.

Got a little petticoat action going on!

These sweet little gold buttons caused me some trouble when I wore this top for the first time.
They all came undone.
Cleavage alert!

Thankfully, I was only round at my mate Tracey's for a coffee, so I borrowed a needle and thread, sat in my cardigan, and stitched up the button holes. The top is stretchy enough to get it on without undoing the buttons, and further unscheduled boob display has been averted.

I think this skirt is amazing. I would have twirled if the paving and leaves weren't wet and slippery, and my sense of balance rather limited.

So I swished instead.

Raindrops on cobwebs...

...and whiskers on kittens.

I know, Charlie's already been featured, but look, he's so cute!
(Guinea pigs disagree.)

You might have noticed that I like boots.

There's a line in a Stevie Nicks song that goes cause I wear boots all summer long.

In this country, that can often be true.

And because I wear them a lot, and because my incipient bunion is hurting and I can't always manage heels, and because other similarly foot-defect-afflicted bloggers have recommended them, and because they were only £18, I bought these from Ebay.

(Btw , I have no idea why Blogger has changed the font on this last section and won't let me do anything about it. Weird.)

Is it really childish of me that the brand name makes me giggle?

And reminds me of this?

(The clip is a similar vintage to the skirt, I reckon.)

Let's break some rules!

You've seen this frock before here.

It had another outing yesterday, and always draws comments about being dressed up. Is it because of the gold sparkle, do you think?

I seem to have a print-on-print thing going on at the moment, what with the tartan overload in my last post, and now polka dots and circle print tights. Too much is never enough!

My new leather-look hair flower/brooch is having another outing too. Have you noticed that when I get something new, I wear it to death?

Close-up photos are a challenge I have set myself. I will not be afraid!

                                                                          A noble profile!

1960s black/gold lurex frock (Chesterfield flea market), tights (M&S sale), tan leather bag (Christmas swap gift from Alex), bangles (charity shop and gift from Helga), belt and hair flower (Oasis sale), leopard print scarf (another bit of gorgeousness from Helga!), suede ankle boots (Ebay), faux fur (charity shop), black top underneath dress (ancient)

This blogging business is very interesting; it has certainly given me a different perspective on myself, or at least how I look. As I said in my last post, I rarely wear anything short (ie. above the knee) as I think my legs are a bit chunky. I will not start talking about "cankles", as I particularly loathe the way the media decides to "name'n'shame" parts of women's bodies, just to give us yet more body image-based misery and anxiety. (I like what Hadley Freeman has to say on the subject here.)

However, I have not been immune to the "I can't wear that because I've got fat ankles/knees" crap peddled by the Trinny and Susannahs of this world. Hence wearing an above-the-knee frock, patterned tights and ankle boots is something of an act of rebellion against such rules.

I'm breakin' all the rules, people, and I just don't care!

And while I'm not really a big fan of Queen, this video always makes me smile. Roger Taylor-as-Britney and Freddie rocking the thigh-split PVC mini skirt, pointy boobs and a moustache - what's not to love?

After the Goldrush

A bright but chilly trip to Chesterfield flea market this morning demanded a bright yet warm outfit.

As I have been doing a lot of colour lately, I decided to try something different - black and gold.

I bought the dress from one of my favourite stalls on the market earlier this year, but thought it was a bit big for me. So I tried, but failed, to sell it on Ebay, and now I am keeping it; with the addition of a belt, it fits fine. It was too nippy to wear it as a sleeveless frock but put a black top underneath and hey presto - sleeves!

Black and gold isn't a combination I do much, I usually go for black and silver, but I like this!

And a girl needs a bit of leopard for company on a cold day.

Much side eye at school. Can't think why.

Youngest Child's teacher said I looked like a 70s rock chick dating Mick Jagger. She clearly hasn't seen Vix, who has the Rolling Stones groupie look nailed to perfection!

I think this is more a blend of Bet Lynch-meets-Mad Men, but I'm open to suggestions!

1960s black and gold wool dress and leopard print faux fur jacket (Chesterfield flea market), boots (Ebay), stripey bag with wooden handles (Ebay), belt (charity shop)

Assorted charity shopped and market stall bling, and the little cuff was from Vix.

I thought of using Gold Dust Woman as the title of this post, but I'm not really a cocaine-snorting rock chick kind of girl, despite what the teachers at school might imagine...

So I have headed for the calmer waters of a bit of country folk; just love those harmonies.

And if I ever give up the hair dye, I want my grey hair to look as beautiful as Emmylou Harris'.
