From peasant chic to fabulous Fifties

This was me today, pottering about running errands, charity shop mooching, and generally avoiding anything remotely constructive.

This is currently my favourite blouse, it seems to work well with all my skirts.

1970s peasant blouse (Ebay, 99p), Uttam embroidered skirt (flea market, £4), tights, belt and bangles (charity shop), boots (Ebay, can't recall how much), necklace and ring (handmade gifts from the awesome Krista)

I found a little stash of 1950s children's books in Oxfam at £2 each, so I bought these four.

Couldn't resist. Loving the little girl with the whip - feel free to make up your own caption!

I am out later tonight with some friends I used to work with, back when I was gainfully employed as something professional, and not just a housework-avoiding charity-shopping layabout.

I have had a little trying-on session and wonder if this is too much for a real ale pub in the back streets of Sheffield?

Probably! But why let that stop me?

The extra volume of the petticoat might get me some space at the bar!

1950s dress (vintage shop, reduced price because it needed some TLC), 1950s petticoat (St. Mary's vintage market), feather fascinator (Ebay), metallic T-bars and brooch (charity shops), sequin clutch bag (gift from Funky Diva Helga), faux pearls (swap prize from sweet Squirrel Vanessa)

                                                                                           Feathering my nest!

What do you think? De trop? No no!

I can live with being overdressed, I just hope I don't spill curry on my lovely frock. If anyone gives me side-eye, they can kiss my ruffles!

Wishing you all a fabulous weekend!
                                                                                   xxxxxx

Oh Curtise, I was loving the skirt but the dress... the dress..... is fabulous. De trop? Non way. I only wish I could still fit in my 50s dresses which are languishing in my wardrobe (and which I wore as a matter of course throughout my Sheffield days... awwww). Anyway, have a brilliant night out. xxx

I love all of those annuals especially that Girl one - I've got a book called "Mother Tells You How" which is made up of advice strips from there. Gorgeous dress - have fun on the tiles tonight! x

Pas de trop! That dress is FAB-U-LOUS! The fabric looks so expensive, and the fascinator looks as if it was made for it. Loving the skirt also.
How times have changed, no whip waving little girls or Golliwogs on Annual covers these days.
Enjoy your vindaloo.

Your dress leaves me breathless - it's fantastic. The blue crinoline must feel wonderful when you walk and make a swishy sound, and when you sit it will pouff out. Your hands must also brush against the skirt when you are standing. Don't fidget! Marvellous! Love that last pic. Mwah!

I overdress all the time. No one dresses up anymore! The only way to dress up is to overdress! You look so gorgeous. That dress is ridiculous. Also: I like the pattern mixing.

I don't think that outfit is too much at all. I think it looked rather stunning, and that's a good thing.

Also--super LOVE the peasant blouse.

And a quote? "He'll learn. Sooner or later, HE'LL LEARN."

You can-can and must must wear that most beautiful 50's dress when you go out tonight!

I was loving your peasant chic, but that gorgeous silvery black cocktail number has upsurped my affections. Don't even think of not wearing it. You look gorgeous!

Love the books too, I'm afraid I can't think of a good enough caption for the little girl with the whip at the mo...ride 'em cowboy? Boring!

Oh my God! There is too much amazingness on my monitor this Saturday morning - first Sarah Misfit looking like a total stunner and now you! Fabulous fabulous dress, I am so jealous of your enormous wardrobe and your incredible finds. You really look beautiful.

Also am green with envy over those books, I would have grabbed them in a heartbeat and spent an hour at home sniggering over the stories and pictures. The little girl whipping her brother who has been mounted by a golliwog - it's all too perfect!

Have a great weekend xxx

Those annuals are so sweet, sadly my brains' too fuddled with last night's ale to think of a witty caption! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Love all your looks! I have a skirt very similar to your first one that I wore today. It's green rather than blue and I love it! I like the way you have paired it with an embroidered peasant top. Think I might have to find myself something like that...

I do hope you wore that sensational outfit out on the town, it's simply beautiful.
That little girl has the devil in her, I'm sure of it, goodness knows what she has planned with that whip in her hand.
Your outfits seem to be getting better all the time, I'm getting quite inspired by the headwear.

And the second outfit... the dress... HOLY GUACA-FRICKIN-MOLE - THE FROCK! You look absolutely amazing (uh, were we separated at birth? we have very similar taste) and please PLEASE leave me this frock in your will. Unless you want to be buried in it, in which I am SO not surprised.

Love both of your looks..."I can live with being overdressed"...I think we must be kindred spirits.

I found your lovely blog through a comment on Melanie's blog and was intrigued as I have also been in a process of reinvention this year...reclaiming parts of me that had gone dormant in my journey raising children...

Curtise, that is one kick-ass gorgeous dress, and it looks delish on you (look how TINY your waist looks!). I love fascinators, I find they look much better on me than most hats with my very short hair. YOu just go and show those pub patrons what a super-stylin' petticoat-packing dame you are. Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog!
