Come together

We are back from our stay at my sister's in rural Buckinghamshire, and we had a lovely time. We got to spend time with family, and the weather made it feel like we were really on holiday.

There are photos (later) but I'm starting by showing my enthusiasm for the London 2012 Olympics - I am genuinely looking forward to it all!

Yeah, where the hell is my invitation to joing Team GB's Posing squad?

They don't know what they are missing. I'm Gold Medal standard.

I enjoyed the opening ceremony last night, despite not really expecting to, I loved all the music, and actually laughed out loud at the Queen parachuting in with James Bond (although we were on to our second bottle of wine by then, which may have influenced things a little...) Made me consider that there must be a sense of humour behind that rather grim royal facade after all.

Eldest stayed up to watch the whole thing, testing her parents' geographical knowledge by asking where various countries are (err... Nauru? Palau? Sorry, kid, look in the Atlas!) and singing along enthusiastically with Sir Macca.

My little Olympians decided swimming was their sport of choice, governed entirely by the fact that my sister's beautiful house has a swimming pool in the garden.

We went to Cogges Farm in Oxfordshire for a picnic in the orchard and to check out the animals.

How inviting is this gateway?

Beautiful Oxfordshire stone farm buildings.

The cow shed has been converted into a cafe.

Despite all the bunting and the Mind your head signs on every low beam, OH still managed to whack his head...

Bear of very little brain.

My abiding memory of childhood family picnics on a Sunday afternoon is my mum choosing a church to visit, and my dad lying down and going to sleep on the picnic blanket. Seldom Seen Kid has the manly pose down pat. I wonder if it's genetic?

Hmm... I appear to have become my mother, here we are at Winslow church (where I was christened).

Stripey t-shirt, belt and bracelets (charity shopped)
Bathing beauty skirt (Ebay) - last seen here
Sunnies (darling Sarah)

Surely the Synchronised Swimming team must need me?

I'm right here waiting!

 xxx

PS. No film of the performance, but we loved Sheffield's own Arctic Monkey's version of Come Together, and I heartily approve of Alex's hair cut! Which would please him no end, I'm sure...

I thought the Arctics did a cracking job of that too, but then I'm a big AM fan so I would say that. That skirt is so cute, I love it and I think that you would definitely be an asset to the synchronised swimming team! Wow, a pool in the back garden, now that is impressive. Have a good weekend. Xx

I just love those stone buildings and the church photos. Beautiful!!
I'm curious about your shoes, they look comfy but I think you forgot to mention them..or didn't want to. ;) They look like something I could wear.
Everything in your neck of the woods looks like someplace I'd love to see in person but the long flights are what bother me.
Have a fun weekend as your gloriously stylish self with your little Olympians.

p.s.
Once I do get my t-shirts in stock I'm dying to make you a "So past caring" texty tee. Would that be a good idea?

Wow, that skirt is ace! These pics look so lovely. Looks like the kids had a great time. Rural England is utterly charming when we have the weather to enjoy it. I must admit I do love an old church. I'm a bit obsessed with old graveyards. The older and more overgrown the better!

I thought the opening ceremony was unexpectedly engaging too. I'm not usually interested in such things but I loved the music they featured in the bit with Sir Tim Berners Lee. It's only right that real achievement and real heroes like that should be celebrated xxx

Alex was looking a lot like a teenage John Lennon, which I liked. I liked the whole thing, despite like you, not expecting to, it even thrilled me and made me emotional in parts. Anyway, I really do love that skirt and it looks like you had an amazing time, the pool looks huge! Love that deliciously macabre gravestone, the shots of the kids lounging in the grass and what looks like the cutest piggy ever

Hi Curtise,
Looks like a fun time was had by all in rural Bucks, that swimming pool is the size of my entire back garden!
Sensational snaps btw, espesh the one of the ironwork on the church door. Glad you have the opportunity to wear your synchronised swimmer skirt, like you I was unexpectedly surprised by the opening ceremony although admitted defeat at Chad and went to bed.

Curtise, did you look ON PURPOSE for THE perfect skirt to celebrate the olympics?!?
That stone farmhouse is EXTREMELY Wuthering Heights. I'm delighted. Wish we had some fun places like that around here! I'm glad you had a nice little trip. That pool looks fabulous.

I love the skirt! You can't go past a good novelty print;) It looks like you had a lovely holiday - I love the old churches & buildings, we just don't have anything so old here!

Ooh, you schooled us in the posing department; we can't touch dat!

Love all the great photos. I'm totes up for the historic church tour, which means I've become my grandmother :o

It's just so great to see the SUN shining on GB and your lovely skirt and your sister's pool. It's crazy how the Olympics can inspire our children. I know that one of my daughters did head vaults off the arm of the sofa and I promptly enrolled her in gymnastics...to preserve the furniture.

And, yes, the manly pose MUST be genetic. I think it has to do with display of the equipment...if you get my drift.

Looks like you had a lovely and relaxing visit with your sister.
What a gorgeous place, I never tire of English scenery.
I am obsessed with the Olympics, good to see at least one of my bloggy friends has some interest!
Love to you.xx.

Lovely pics of your hols.
WE enjoyed the ceremony too. My 15-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son sat with their mum and dad all Friday evening which is unheard of.
And they loved every minute.
What a genius Danny Boyle is.

Welcome home, oh fabulous one! How apt that you're wearing your legendary swimmers skirt and the tee shirt you're wearing with it is totally gorgeous.
Your sister's pool is fantastic, I bet the kids never wanted to leave.
Loved the opening ceremony (apart from Macca at the end, had to turn it off), made me quite emotional!

How great is that skirt? Perfectly themed! I thought the opening ceremony was fabulous. The Artic Monkeys did a great job. Sheffield should be proud of them!

You'd be the star of the synchronised swimming team Curtise, although somehow I can't see you wearing one of those nose pluggy thingy's. I think you'd add a certain pizazz to the team. Your swim cap would be awesome I reckon. I didn't watch the opening ceremony, but caught the most fabulous bits on the news and I liked the James Bond Queen bit and I thought her hat was pretty x

Kaffesoester said...

I love your Olympics skirt! You should have front row seats at one of the competitions wearing that! This summer I realized that no matter where you go on holiday, children will measures the success proportionally to how many hours they get to spend in the pool! Yours look like they're doing great!

Vicky Hayes said...

Curtise - you were so close I could've reached out and touched you! (In fact I might have - did any weird old ladies bash into you while you were in Winslow?!) Sounds as if you had a lovely time in the sunshine. I loved the opening ceremony too - and my OH startled me by knowing where ALL the countries were! Love your Olympic outfit - what a great mix of pattern and print. Vicky x

Hello Doll!

Long time no chat. You are looking lovely in blue, and I can ALMOST see you're knees. Are you still loving long skirts? I think I will have you forever rocking long skirts.

I've been giving blogging a break - but I feel rejuvinated (sp?) again.

Hope all is well,
Michelle :)

Adoring that Swimmers skirt! The print is amazing, and you wear it like a goddess. I must confess that I am a little envious of your sisters pool! I'd kill for one of my own!

I nearly squealed when I saw the print on your skirt, it's amazing! MAJOR WANT!
I watched the Olympic games opening ceremony too and I must say that'[s probably all that I'll watch of the Olympics as I don't pay much attention to any sports in general anyway, but I loved it! I was saying to my housemate when Daniel Craig went into the romm 'naaah that's a lookalike' but no, I was wrong, it was Her Magesty herself and it made me laugh too!
As for the haircut on the Artic Monkeys dude, it was sooo cute. I love them.
I love the photos on this post, I always like to see places through other people's eyes! xx

You would definitely win a medal for the best Olympic-inspired outfit. The countryside looks so peaceful - what a perfect vacation spot, and a Fabulous pool! I watched a bit of the opening ceremonies, saw the Queen's helicopter "arrival". Does anyone know if that was actor Kenneth Branaugh in the crowd of costumed actors? The camera kept going back to a group of black clad men in top hats and I would swear it was him!

Lynn Hasty said...

Hi Curtise! So nice to meet you. I love your enthusiastic expression over the Olympics! :D Actually your vacation looks grand, including those old stone buildings, which I would LOVE to see in person some day. Yes, the gateway is inviting. By the way, isn't it funny how we turn into our moms?? Have a lovely day! xoxo Lynn

That music makes me want to wig out. Of course your squad is missing - your mastery of this fine sport has propelled you to coaching or judging status. I liked seeing the church where you were christened. And I'm surprised you could get your kids to go home when sis has a POOL! Looks like a fun trip.
