A little bit of heart and soul

Oh the rain.

It's not raining men, or in my heart.

It probably will rain until September.

Why does it always rain on me?

Yes, here we are in July, and I'm wearing my winter boots. Bloody hell.

I like this In-wear frock, which I charity shopped ages ago. I don't wear it so much now as my mostly-black years are behind me. I suppose it's from the 1990s, but the slouchy bat-wingy style reminds me of the 80s.

I'm kind of loving a bit of 1980s style these days, after all those years of mockery.

So because I couldn't take any outfit pics today (torrential rain meant outside photos were impossible, and it's been so dark and dreary that the indoor photos were disastrous), I thought I would entertain you with excerpts from my 1980s-early 1990s curly years.

I longed for Pre-Raphaelite hair, and paid handsomely to try and achieve it.

Permed, dyed, backcombed, with a ton of hairspray - my 1980s hair was chemical-heavy and frankly crackled to the touch. I may have put my own personal hole in the ozone layer. I do apologise.

I wanted to look like...

Sarah Jane Morris...

The Witches of Eastwick...

Rosie Vela...

or Madonna in Dick Tracy.

But I fear I was rather more like...

Deidre Barlow. Oh dear.

The person I was most often likened to was...

Carol Decker. Hmmm....

These days, I don't push too hard against nature.

The hair is straight.

(Still dye it though!)

Have a good weekend!

Excellent post! What did we do to our hair, eh? I had my first home perm when I was 12!!
Not a huge Carol Decker fan I must say, but very happy to see a picture of Cher looking witchy. Have a great weekend.xxxx

I remember those 80's perms so well. The world and his wife had one. My mum would never let me get one as I was too young but I was so jealous cos all the girls in my school had them! There is definitely a touch of the pre-raphaelite but those pin straight fringes always gave it away!;) I love seeing people's old photographs. You looked great and nothing like Deidre Barlow! I had to google a couple of those people (still not sure who Sarah Jane Morris is?). I do remember T'Pau though and I will have that song in my head for days now:)

Have a great weekend xxx

That hair style was so popular back then I always loved the way the hair of the women in the band Heart and Stevie Nicks looked. I bet the famous people that had great looking hair used extensions and fillers before everyone learned what they were.

You can stop right there as far as a "Joni" outfit. That is at the top of my list for favorites. I use to have a black phase too. Sometimes I go back because it's a comfort thing and timeless. But it just takes a day or two and I'm back onto color.
Those tights are so cute. There's a floral pair in a local store I think I'll reconsider. You make it so hip!
I had the same perm but mine was so fried with blonde highlights. Ewww!

Love your perm pics but per-lease, you do NOT look like Deidre! I permed my hair for years (and did my mum's with 'Twink') Funnily enough though I think it was in better condition then than now, hilights and straighteners have ruined it.

Ah I love these pictures!!! You are such a diva in that big ass hair and shoulder pads. I remember this style, I wore it too! You totally rock it! It was all about our hair wasn't it. I had perms for several years. Were the spiral perms ever big out there? The Witches of Eastwick, loved that movie so much!! You look super cute in this lil black number and floral tights and winter boots. I'm starting to think the UK will float away before I have a chance to see it!

Stay dry and friggin awesome!

I love that dress!
And the hair!! Woah. I was that shade a mere 2 yrs ago. But my hair was styled à la gaga (meaning I was a younger version of Mary Portas).

On the other hand, I love t-pau!!
Have a good weekend!

Love the photos, its always fun to look back and see how we have changed. I resisted perms in the 1980s, but had one in the 1990s. July and winter boots does not seem right, I was imagining it would be all warm and summery in the northern hemisphere. Hope you are keeping warm,

I still have crispy curls. I love the first photo, I'd love that hair! The weather is really starting to depress me and I'm resolutely wearing sandals. Fab dress too!

Lovely pictures! I used to always get Carol Decker comparisons so soon grew to dislike her as I thought my naturally curly hair was better!

Ooooh thank you for the romp down memory lane ... you're forgiven for your contribution to the ozone issue, coz I too have made my rather disturbing impression;))). Yep, perm, bleach, upside down hair with a can of industrial hair spray, it had to be done in the name of beautification didn't it? I love your pics so much!!!!! Piss off rain!!!! xxxxxxx

I like your curly locks! One of my daughters had them then and they were indeed high maintenance. Your hair today looks really thick. What color is it without dying?

Oh dear - hair styles of yesterday...they are always a little bit cringe worthy! But I have seen worse and my own photos of the 90's all have me wearing my glasses - which were HUGE and baby pink...oh dear...

I love your wee black dress - looks cute and easy to wear.

I had a spiral perm in 84 to look like whatshisname from Dead or Alive!

I LOOOVE this post, Curtise, you idiot! I actually love your big big hair - and I also love your current hair - and I love this funky ruffled dress. You're a supermodel superstar wonderwoman! LOVE YOU! Sarah xxx

I had a perm when I was in my last year of high school - such a disaster! I always wanted wild, curly long hair, but I've made peace with my fine straight hair by just chopping it off! I'm so sorry the weather is miserable over there - if I could send you some of our stifling heat, I would. Loved Joni's post about the two of you!

I like your hair as it is now, it looks very thick and healthy! Of course I had my hair permed in the 80's, but with the addition of pink and purple streaks! Do you know that In Wear is a Danish brand? It still exists and can be bought from House of Fraser.

Although it rains a lot your garden doesn't seem to mind - it looks fantastic! A great back drop for your outfit. I love your tights, and even if it's out of season you look great with the boots on too.

Great post Curtise and oh yes I have some fine memories of the 80s BIG hair era! My thick dark mane had it's fair share of perms, tints, dyes and a ton of teasing and hairspray. When I look back at my old photos I can't believe I spent so much time making it look so fucking awful!!!
I wont get that T'Pau song out of my head either! Love you in your batwingy frock!

I am and always will be an eighties girl at heart. I have some permed pics too.

I love the photos!!I always enjoy to see pictures from the past, I like to be in touch with memories and to feel a little melancholic! I really like your hair especially in the picture in the car: long and wild, the color is beautiful, I should take it to my hairdresser!Ah!The witches of Eastwick great film!
I also really like your otfit, the floral tights and the black dress are spectacular!

So sorry about the rain. I would be annoyed, too, but at least you look good! Best wishes for the sun to head your way soon.

I wanted hair exactly like in that first photo. Or like Madonna's in Desperately Seeking Susan. I prefer to forget my attempts at either!

When will this rain ever stop? I'm going to build an ark! But you are looking very cool and funky no matter what, and your hair now looks great.

Fabulous In Wear dress and I love the patterned tights.

I had my fair share of 1980s perms. Luckily I don't have any evidence of that fact.

OMG T'Pau! Blast - past.

Brilliant - I love old perm photos when they're not mine! I wanted to look like Star from The Lost Boys, sadly it didn't quite work out that way...

I wasn't old enough for my parents to let me have a fab perm, but I loved them all the same. I was so jealous of the movie-star perms! I think yours looked more fabulous than you think - and you look like you're having so much fun!

Love the outfit!

Ooooh. I gasped when I saw the picture of Rosie Vela!!! I will google her once I'm done with this comment. I adored her as well. My hair is naturally curly, for better or worse, and she was definitely an icon of gorgeousness. I also remember In Wear!!!!!! A wonderful label. Thank you so much for this post, as it brought back stuff I'd totally forgotten.

You, by the way, look even lovelier now. It's wonderful to change and embrace the NOW. I love your boots, too. I'm sweating in the air conditioning. Wanna house trade for a vacation?

Great outfit, Curtise. I loved the photo romp through your hair history and hair divas. Your past very much mirrors my own. I had many a perm BUT I liked afros so after my perms I'd brush my hair out. I think I had the largest orb of blonde afro hair of anyone in our high school. Just. Couldn't. Help. Myself. Your hair today is purrfect.

Oh now see I envy your straight hair...what you worked hard for, I have naturally, and it's a nightmare to style. Apparently our winter is warmer than your summer at the moment, 18 degrees here today, we think thats Arctic!

Great 80's hair retrospective! I too had a perm during that time, but it was a short lived. Your 'rain' outfit is framed by the most beautiful garden. Love the tights with boots.

We finally have some rain in the midst of drought, so you've inspired me to put together a 'rain' outfit!

Oh you make me laugh, Curtise. First, love the look (I am with you on the batwings comment) - though I'm sorry you are wearing your winter boots. I love the way you've styled the outfit with the patterned tights - I never know how to wear them. And the 80s hair? Love it, quelle flashback - but how did we get the perms so big? BTW I hadn't heard of "It's Raining Men" until I moved to the UK - now I love that song! xo

Hello!

My Grandma used to do perms and she gave me a perm once when I was about 10 because I begged and pleaded and cried and all my Aunties had perms. *hahaha*
I didn't mind the roller part... but once she stuck on the solution *GAAAGGGG* I remember saying LETS WASH IT OUT I DON'T LIKE IT!!! *HAHAHA*

I love your past pictures, thanks for sharing.

What a fabulous hair history, some of your icons were the same as mine, Cher in The Witches Of Eastwick & Sarah Jane Morris & curly Madonna. I remember being told that I looked like I should be a member of Bananarama being the height of flattery!
You were gorgeous in the 1980s and you're even better now. I love that frilled frock and the crazy tights, perfect shitty weather dressing, you've even mesmerised the moggy! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What a brave woman you are, posting 1980s hair photos. Like you, I wanted long curly hair so got a double perm (I think that just means I paid twice the price) for my waist-length hair. I have a pic of myself that looks very much like the one of you in glasses and the boyfriend jacket in the lower left.

Deidre, oh my I never seen her in her younger fro days!
I had my perm cha cha hair too, took forever to grow oyt.
You should wear black frocks more often, black makes you look sexy and mysteriosa...loving your floral tights..
