Vintage shopping at Cutlers' Hall

Making the most of what might be my last free Saturday until the new year, I went to a vintage fair yesterday.

Not with any intentions of buying really, but mainly because it was in Cutlers' Hall, a building I have never been in before, despite living in Sheffield for over 30 years.

But wouldn't you know it, even though I had my I'm only browsing head on, I stumbled across this mid-1960s mod style two piece suit, and couldn't resist.

The coat with its detachable hood looks remarkably contemporary, I think.

Wearing the pieces together is a little too much, but if I separate them...

...I think they're groovy!

Gorgeous mid-60s chicks.

1960s Tricoville knit dress suit - vintage fair
1980s boots - Second to None, Walsall
Pendant - gift from bostin bird Vix
Bangles and tights - charity shopped
1950s tapestry bag - vintage shop, Birmingham

This is my kind of shopping centre;

an historic building (built 1832) of great significance in this city...

...with Master Cutlers of the past gazing down from the walls...

...a fine staircase, beautiful examples of Sheffield's industrial heritage, and a stunning Victorian tiled floor.

The vintage stalls contained the usual eclectic mix of eras, styles and prices on their tables and rails.

I adored this lurex maxi dress, and the Victorian style blouse was bought from Biba by the stall holder's mother in 1973.

(The photo of the label is just for you, Melanie, for future reference!)

And I also found my Christmas present from Simon, a beautiful vintage Windsmoor faux fur coat.
It came in under our allocated budget for gifts, so I pounced.

But I can't wait till Christmas to wear it!

Hope your weekend has been full of the things you love.

xxxxxx

I can't decide what I love more, the groovy suit or stunning black fur. Do I have to decide? You and your newly acquired treasures are so fab. XXX

You could be in that groovy video with that swingaring-a-riffic two-piece. I like them worn together. And you really WEAR it. Yeah, baby.
Ah yes, BIBA is high style ALL the way. Hence its covetability. Note to self: Probably not light beach-weight cotton. Still like my sparkles though.
Glad you had a good time exploring.

I love a vintage fair from a buyer's perspective. Cutler's Hall looks exquisite, so much glorious Victoriana and fine detail.
Love that plum suit, it looks great together and even better worn separately. The colour is gorgeous on you.
That lurex dress is fab, wonderfully displayed and the Biba blouse is something I'd be lustfully pawing whatever the label inside.
Fantastic coat, looks wonderful on you, Simon's a sweetheart!
Love you! xxxxxxx

I love the 2 pieces together! Great colour too.. I have a few 2 piece outfits that my mother wore in the 60s, with her skinny arse in them... One day I might have the opportunity to slither around in them! I live and hope!

Love all those scissors!

I wish I had known that the Cuters Hall was open. I've been on once before but need to show Hubby inside. It is the best building we have in the city and I can't believe it is rarely open. That is a fab outfit and it so suits you. Did you watch the Madmen series? xxx

That suit is perfect on you Curtise, love the colour with your hair, and that fake fur is a gorgeous Christmas prezzy, Simon did really well even if he doesn't know it! I love the vintage shimmery maxi dress too, it's such a beautiful colour. I would have taken the opportunity to visit such a beautiful old building too. xx

What a groovy suit. I love the stripy detail on the cuffs and hem and I think it looks fine together...maybe only in b&w? What a pity you didn't treat your neighbours to some go-go dancing...this outfit is perfect for it. Cutlers Hall is very impressive indeed, so many gorgeous examples of Sheffield's finest workmanship.
Fabularse faux fur coat...it looks uber warm and highly strokable, what a great pressie. xxxxx

Cutlers' Hall - Sheffield. It makes perfect sense! That's where our family silver comes from. Well, EPNS anyway. What a venue for a vintage fair.

Look at all your treasures, that two piece suit is amazingly groovy and looks in pristine condition. Nice find Mrs I'm-Only-Browsing! I also love the lurex maxi, it's just beautiful and that coat from Simon is the best. He has great taste ;) Of course you know that everyone is going to be stroking you every time you wear it? Call it a perk of the job. xxxxxxx

I'd have been wrestling that elephant into my handbag!

Fabulous suit, Curtise. You're absolutely right: it has that go-go vibe but still feels applicable and contemporary. And the coat is gorg! What wonderful finds. Xo

You look fab in that suit. Lovely colour!xxx

That ultra mod suit looks sooo good on you, as separates or together. The grape is a great colour with your hair, and the dress hugs your curves in all the right places. The stripe detail is perfect.

Cutler's Hall is a beautiful building - anything old and cool like that gets demolished over here :(

joyatri said...

The mod look really suits you! I hope you plan to wear that suit to work. You're right the jacket looks very contemporary. I'm sure you'll get tons of use out of both pieces.

I'm not surprised you had to get that combo- look how beautiful it looks on you! It's one of those things that looks like it was made for you!
That place looks really interesting. I should come and visit you again after the new year, when you have time for a spot of charity shopping and and some chatting!

I'm so sorry Curtise, I am completely out of the loop due to the fact that life has been happening too fast for me and I've been having to hang on to my ears! But after a rummage through your blog I see that you are now a working girl and I love that it's because you sensibly wouldn't let Debenhams not have you! Loving the outfits (especially today's which I covet and the slinky black number which makes you look so sophisticated!) Vicky x

Vanessa said...

Gorgeous outfits, you rock them wonderfully. Love all the vintage goodness in that fair, too!

Unknown said...

(Catching up with you, finally! I miss so much!)
I think you have a certain new glow about you these last few posts. You've either taken a new lover, Debenhams is agreeing with you more than we all imagained, or there's a better night cream that you've discovered that I need to know about!

Love the suit. Nooooo ... not too much together. So a blast from my past, but never had such a beauty. As the above hints, I think you look completely beautiful in it.

But I still have not gotten over you in as the Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress. You time traveled and inspired the Hollies! I'm so happy you've allowed just a little LBD into your life ... no need to give up color. Just one more idea to embrace and make your own, and you did that for sure! I'm still knocked out.

Had Debenhams clarifed the dress policy?

I've a good ending to a scary few days to report. Our Lucy (the doppelganger for your kitteh) just disappeared last Thursday night. She's a house cat, and we live on a busy farm road, so we were panic ridden for a couple of days, and sinking in to mourning. Then she just showed up in the garage, thinner, cold and ready to come in!
She has an appointment with the kitty-gyno on Monday next. Urk.
So glad she's back and in one piece... Dan was a broken man, I tell you.
So glad your holidays are shaping up ... have a great week!

Thank you for the tour of that wonderful building - i just love those, we have a few in Montreal but not like yours -
I love your 60s ensemble what a wonderful find and the color is so groovy!

The fur coat is also a wonderful find, lucky, lucky girl! Sometimes the thrift shop God are on our side!

Hugs

Oh wowza! You look such a glam sophisticated bird in that plum dress - the coats lovely too but the dress, you look fab!! Nice find! I'm just sat here Oooo-ing and awww-ing over the Cutlers Hall (I'm a sad possum lol), the architecture and those floors!! Beautiful! A perfect setting for you to find that gorgeous dress etc! Hope all is going swimmingly with Debenhams! You'll look so glam, will you wear the plum dress? Hope so!

That faux fur coat is fabulous. One of my favourite coats I have is a Windsmoor. It's still looks like new even though it's over 50 years old. I love the two piece suit. The colour is fantastic.

Ah Curtise this is such a sweet dress, I bet it's warm too and really different from anything you already have. 1832 is an old building for sure and I would so love to visit Sheffield now I know there is more to it than Def Leppard:). Your Christmas coat is humpable I had to say it if Helga didn't.
Loveyouxxxxxxxxooooooo

Such a wonderful, vintage find that looks stunning on you, Curtise! I think both pieces look great together when you leave the jacket unbuttoned. How cool that jacket will look with pants as well! And that faux fur coat is to die for; a real keeper! :) Such a bonus to your day to shop in a beautiful, old, historic building as well. Stay warm!

I adore the two piece suit, and more importantly, how it looks on you. The colors, the perfect fit, and your stunning self confidence as you wear it. The boots and bag couldn't be more lovely.

Holy Crap that outfit is amaze! I am in LOVE!! But then I am such a 1960s girl at heart. I freakin' love that jacket too. Looks so snuggly. Such a beautiful hall - I always feel a bit jealous of all the old history my British blogging pals are surrounded by! Such is the life of a colonial I suppose ;)

I don't think that suit together is too much, nope, not too much at all, unless being effin' brilliant is too much, then it is...wow, it is so cool, and I need to stop gushing now.

Also, why do I think I need a silver pleated lurex maxi dress? lol

OOOOh that mod suit is SPECTACULAR! Love the colour on you and I love it as a two piece. And LOVE your xmas faux fur. And spending the day at the vintage fair with you would have been the best xmas pressie ever.
