Reasons to be cheerful

It's been a beautiful day today. It was a pleasure to walk to work this morning without a jacket.

1970s Debroyal maxi skirt - vintage fair
Cardigan, top, shoes, bangles and 1960s vinyl bag - charity shopped
Sunglasses - retail

I do love my charity shop days; today, I've rearranged the bric-a-brac display to my satisfaction, sorted and priced all manner of objects from vintage tea sets, glassware and kitchenalia to linens and clothes, and shaken my head over the sad state of some donations.

I've chatted and laughed with customers, and put the world of charity shopping to rights with my fellow volunteers and our lovely manager.

Yes - a good day.

Another good day was had by Claudia and I on Saturday.

I texted her while I was at the hairdresser's to ask her if she wanted to meet me in town afterwards.

Claud: Why?
Me: Err... Cos I love you. And I might buy you something.
Claud: What time?

Cheeky bugger.

Two dresses from a charity shop and a pair of shoes for school later, and here we are in Mooch Vintage. It's Mama's turn!

The shop has moved to larger premises since I took the gang there on our Bloggers Day in Sheffield last year. But proprietor Wayne remains as friendly as ever; he didn't object to me taking photos and taking ages to select a few frocks to try on, and talked strong colours and prints with me and the virtues of Converse with Claudia.

Colour and sparkle...

taxidermy, some with accessories...

Japanese beauties...

and the Perfect Bag, but it wasn't for sale. Which was probably just as well, since I might have been tempted to bankrupt myself in order to buy it, I loved it so much.

What I did purchase from Mooch was the 1970s white print dress on the right; the blue/green pleated 1970s beauty on the left was a half-price bargain from Freshman's vintage boutique.

2 dresses + 2 dresses = happy mum and daughter.

Freshly coloured hair makes me happy too.

I'm vaguely aware of how shallow that makes me sound, but honestly? It's true and I don't care who knows it!

I'm terribly late for Visible Monday but Patti is such a generous hostess, I'm sure she won't mind. I hate to miss it!

Your hair looks fabulous, loving the colour!
If I meet you in town will you take me shopping? I love Mooch and the bizarre mix of vintage and taxidermy. I've got that Bradley Geisha doll on my dressing table.
Those two frocks are gorgeous and so are you and Claud. she's so grown-up.
Spring flowers and sunshine. You can't beat it!
Love you! xxxxx

Isn't the weather just beautiful! Your new dresses are fab, can't wait to see you in them. Your new hair is wonderful, such a gorgeous colour.

My aunts mum had those dolls dotted around the house as I recall. xxx

Ah, those dresses are corkers!!! You did well (and please tell Claudia she looks really nice and I LOVE her dress too!) . Who cares if you think it makes you loook shallow (it doesn't, it's called appreciating things not just expecting them to happen and not being glad. Sorry, I know you know that, but I'm just trying to say, YES, you can say that and not look shallow!) , freshly coloured hair is ace!
I've been enjoying the sun on the way to school- nice to not have to wear my coat so I am not a sweating wreck when I've reached the train station!x

I absolutely love your two new dresses I can so see you in both.

Good lord that bag is a stunner isn't it?

That sounds like the most fabulous day! How lovely that you didn't have to wear a coat! We've had a couple of warm days, but it's clouding up again, waiting to dump rain.

i´m more shallow than you because even freshly washed hair makes me happy ;-) :-)
your fresh color look gorgeous - especially with the sun on your hair! very spring like outfit, that blue is like fresh air. but i would like to see that shoes better - flowers on it??
claudia is such a wonderful young lady and how nice you both had fun together down town!

I don't know why freshly coloured hair making you happy, should make you sound shallow, surely it's just taking pride in your appearance, which of course we all know you do.
Mooch vintage rails look as if they have much to offer, so much colour! I'm loving the white print frock and the expression on that stoat's face. (or is it a weasel?) Ah teenage girls, a sore subject at the moment, but bless Claud for blowing out her mates to be with mum. Have you got your slippers on in that last photo? xxxxxxxxx

You and Claudia are delightful in this pic together: like mother, like daughter, two vintage-loving beauties. And that Perfect Bag is Perfect! I feel the same as you about my days at the thrift store - my "boss" lets me work on whatever I choose and we drink coffee and laugh all the time.
Thanks for linking up, xox.

Little things make happy lives...or so that is what my wise friend once told me when she stated so succinctly ...WTF happened? Life happened! LOL LOVE that comment. Whenever I wonder about anything now I'm going to think of you saying that.

The bag is killer! You both made some great scores.

bisous

It sounds like a fabulously fun day! I wish my girl could get into pretty dresses, but she is more into tshirts and jeans right now. But I still love shopping with her when we can. You both look so lovely by the way! :)

You know how to (Gasp) *Text*?!?!
Can you teach me? I'm impressed. I've yet to memorise my phone number after something like three years.

Nothing shallow about enjoying your hair (and you have great hair). Mother and daughter both scored lovely dresses. And quality time together, of course.

If all it takes to feel good is a little hair care, I'm all for it! You look fantastic. And I love that you had a day out with Claudia and both found gems.
And to walk without a jacket? Aaah, yes. Life is good.

Vintage and taxidermy seems to be a 'thing' these days. Odd. I love your blue maxi skirt, the colours are gorgeous. And you made good purchases too. We are missing these kind of vintage shops in our area now, we had some but they all closed down :( So I am always jealous of all the fab maxi dresses and skirts you find as we just don't get them in this area at all. I found ONE in a car boot sale last week, first one in several years, but of course it was a few sizes too small...

Freshly coloured hair makes me happy too :)

I love that skirt, you look as gorgeous as ever and I adore the photo of yourself and your daughter in your new dresses.

LOVE the taxidermy, I'm seeing a lot of it lately. None of it affordable, mind you.

Have a perfect day xx

Isn't it fun shopping with daughter? I always enjoy it when I have this chance to go shopping with my daughters, or at least with one of them. Love your refreshed hair colour. And who would not feel happy when their hair looks gorgeous?

A dear friend in her 90s finally submitted to cataract surgery and afterwards remarked that it was "almost as anxious-making as changing hairdressers". Self-care is in the enlightened self-interest of any woman of intelligence!

Those brilliant blues in your skirt sing a song of spring skies. And are those April flowers on your slippers?

Must confess I'd be browsing that rack of spangled jackets for my 2015 holiday topper. I do like one new party piece each year which is then donated back into the flow...unless, of course, I decide that it might oust another item from the closet.

Claudia is a beautiful young woman who will probably be shopping in your wardrobe sooner than later. Good genes!

Getting my hair freshly coloured always makes me feel brighter physically and mentally. Your charity shop days do sound delightful - definitely something I think I would enjoy as well.

Had a laugh over your text conversation with Claudia. You both did well in your thrift shopping. I see a few things in the first photo of the rails at Mooch Vintage that I would like to try, and the blue/green pleated dress you scored for half price is so pretty!!

We're finally getting a few flowers here - daffodils, tulips and hyacinths

Did you get the job you applied for? Sounds like the shop is expanding and you've been the catalyst for much of it perhaps. Just your passion injects the right energy into the place.
What a sweet spontaneous date with your daughter. I love it when my son responds to offers like that. We just cherish those moments.

The Style Crone said...

Not shallow at all. The dresses that you and your daughter discovered will increase the happiness of everyone that you meet when wearing them. And if they make you happy, that increases your health. Style is art, and you have plenty of that. Xoxo

The hair looks great! And it doesn't make you sound shallow, everyone should be able to take pleasure in little things. (For me, it's clean bedding. Clean bedding day is made of win.)

Those are some great finds, too.

Hello! Remember me? Back in play, and stopping by to congratulate you on a great spring post. Claudia; girl after my own heart, and you both look so pretty. Glad she got a groovy dress. You look pretty spring-tacular and I love the shorter stack you've had cut for summer! Very period evocative, and works just right with your wardrobe.

I thought "Converse with Claudia" was the name of a blog and couldn't understand why there was no link to click (slaps hand to forehead) but it would be a great name if Claudia ever fancied writing one.
p.s
I think the dolls are Korean

Darling Curtise,

How lovely it is to read about how much joy you get from the simple pleasures of life.

At an recent art exhibition, the artist explained how she tried to capture in her work some beautiful moments which, together, make up the kaleidoscope of life. She felt that every day held promise and it was up to the individual to find the beautiful moments within it and cherish them.

And, reading this, you do cherish those moments. Time with your daughter, laughter with your colleagues, a great hair day and clothes to bring a smile to the faces of everyone you meet. Yes, a Curtise kaleidoscope of precious moments....no wonder the sun is shining!

You've got your daughter well trained in the ways of charity shopping. I had to take mine to work with me in the hols. As she went upstairs she said, ''Look at all this crap!!!''
A proud moment.
Your hair looks divine. Good hair is a great mood lifter! xxxx

Your hair looks great and I noticed that as soon as I clicked on your blog and saw the first pic. I think hair is rather important for most of us, being such a visible representation and so able to alter our appearance.
I would fall for that tapestry bag too. It's gorgeous! Not being able to carry it comfortably would help to prevent me from breaking the bank on it. I have learned my lesson and it's nothing but cross bodies for me now.
Your dresses look great and I can't wait to see them on you. Claudia's dress looks great too and I love the colours on her! xoxo

Now we need to sort this out. Is your hair red purple or brown? Or have the photos been taken on several different occasions? And yes - absolutely the perfect bag.

Ivy Black said...

Gorgeous hair, love.
You two ladies look beautiful. Claudia is so grown up.
Ooh look at those racks of lusciousness in Mooch, and that tapestry bag is fab.
I'd have had the Geisha Bradley dolls like a shot!
Loves ya.

I always feel better with freshly coloured hair too! I love both those dresses, but especially the one with flowers. Look like you two had a lovely afternoon out. Also so please to hear you are enjoying your time at the charity store xox

So funny how teenager's attitude is exactly the same across borders - and continents! But lovely to see the two of you enjoying time out together :-)

You've found great dresses again, my favourite is the pleated 70's, the colours are fantastic. It'll be beautiful with your new hair colour.

freckleface said...

The new hair colour is fab, not surprised you're happy about it. I'm such a lazy trout, I only do mine a couple of times a year, but when I do, I think, why did you wait? Besides, if your only pleasures were terribly meaningful, that might be on the dull side of worthy. No gracias. Those dresses you scored are delicious, can't wait to see you rocking them. Good old Wayne, talking Converse to Claudia, what a nice man. He obviously still fancies you! 😜😂 i do like you in a wench top by the way, and am monumentally impressed at your transition into a job you love, so many people do stuff they hate every day. What's the point? Xxxxxx

I forgot to mention the dolls. I want them!!! Xxxx
