I say it in my head

Another busy weekend has come and gone, and I have been a bit rubbish at taking photos of any of it!

Oh well.

On Friday night, I went to a surprise birthday party for my friend Kathryn.

Her husband and sister arranged a Mad Men-themed evening for her, and the guests dressed up to the nines with great enthusiasm and flair.

Heidi, Jude, Claire and Ruth.

The Big Reveal!

Kathryn and her sister Sarah were both wearing frocks borrowed from my collection. Sarah had been round to my house to choose outfits, and borrow vintage table linen, crockery and glasses - all done in the utmost secrecy, of course.

Needless to say, I didn't get any pics of me but I wore my wonderful 1950s dress as seen on the left here...

...and look - there are the dresses I lent Kath and Sarah!

It was a really good night. I wish I had more pics but the few I did take were mysteriously blurry. Could that possibly be linked to the freely-flowing wine and killer Bloody Marys?

Quite possibly.

More socialising, but of a slightly quieter kind, on Saturday - dinner with friends, lovely.
No pics. Bad blogger.

Today's dress is one of my absolute favourites, chosen with Jane's Shiny T Tuesday link up in mind.

1960-70s maxi - vintage fair
Hair flower, necklace and bangles - charity shopped
Red wooden bangle - gift from lovely Tania
Sandals - retail

I always always always feel great in this dress. The fit, the square neckline, the sleeves, the print and colours - I love everything about it.

Thank you for all the lovely comments about the letter Littlest wrote to me.

She is quite prolific in her note writing, and often expresses her emotions on paper.

I mentioned to her that I didn't recall her ever telling me she hated me, and therefore that she didn't need to request my forgiveness.

She replied, I say it in my head.

Brilliant, on so many levels.

Another gem she came out with recently was that people who say mean things don't like themselves very much, and want others to feel as bad about themselves as they do.

She may not always find the academic stuff easy, but that girl has an emotional intelligence beyond her years.

In my head, I'm saying what the fuck am I going to cook for tea?

Red, red and more red in my garden.

At least the under-ripe strawberries inspired me to buy some riper ones and make Eton Mess for pudding. Mmmmm.

I'm horribly late to Patti's, but I feel thoroughly and happily visible, so I'm heading over there to join the party.

Hope you all had a fine weekend, I'll be catching up with you when the packed schedule this week allows!

I am crazy about that dress you have on in your garden. It looks so nice on you. Charlie was sure looking cute in the background of the pic. *hehehe* Littlest sure is a smart little girl. She is ABSOLUTELY right about people who say mean things about others.
That red flower you have with the little white things coming out the middle. I have those too! I have some burgundy and some purple and whites. (I really like them)
Your friends party looked like a blast. Everyone looks great!! You should charge a rental fee on your frocks. ;) *hehehe*

mad men theme!! love that, and your frocks are just so right for it. your maxi dress is fab as well, and I love seeing the kitty looking on with interest. That is interest, right? Your Littlest is indeed wise and understands the Big Stuff.

Thanks for linking up and stay awesome, xoxoxoxo

I do wish someone I know would have a Mad Men themed event, bi on one I know ever seems to have themed events, dammit. We used to, I suppose we could do it again.....
I adore the 50's frock you wore, and how bloody lucky those wenches are to get to wear two of your splendid frock collection!!! Funnage!
Love this maxi, I always love that perfect fit and print and neckline!!!
The things that come out of childrens mouths!! Fancy Littlest saying that in her dear wee head! O well, she's cleared it all up now!
Love YOU! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

love the photo of you looking one way, and the cat looking the other way.

The cat looks so majestic in that one photo - I think he thinks the blog is for him.

Lovely dress - but I love all your dresses!

It's a great dress! Love the pattern. And the one you wore to Mad Men is sublime. I'm the same with photos, go somewhere and then get home and think, mmmmm, a couple of photos would have been a good idea!

Lovely post, lovely dress, lovely conversations with Littlest. And I love Eton Mess! An ice cream shop here makes an Eton Mess ice cream, but I haven't tried it yet. Now would be a perfect time as our weather is very hot (as it seems everyone's is).

See you at Shiny T Tuesday!

Lovely maxi dress - I love a square neckline and the cur it gorgeous on you. That 50's number you wore to the party is heavenly and all the others look lovely too. Littlest is a clever munchkin and spot on - academia can get you so far but give me kindness, caring and laughter any day - although I am now a little worried about some of the things that go on in my head now.....I may have some explaining/apologising/grovelling to do! Oh and thanks for stopping by my blog xx this blogging thing is rather fabulous!

Who wouldn't want to play in your closet! Looks like a fun party from here.

Love your visible maxi and the floral display in your garden. As for your youngest daughter, emotional intelligence is much more important than any characteristic that I can think of.

Well I was going to comment on what great dresses your friends have until I read that they're yours! I would love to play in your closet!

Connie said...

Oh Goddess of the Love Ocean you really do look beautiful and now you are sharing your sartorial fabulousness. Emotional intelligence abounds in your family.

You guys always have the best parties - this is not the first theme event I've seen over here. Just as well you didn't get pics of yourself - far too much fun was being had. Now that your friends have experienced your treasures again, mightn't they dress like this every day?
And your maxi is caliente. You need to be biting a rose stem in your teeth (after removing the thorns of course).
Ah, Littlest may end up a poet, writer, musician, artist...

I'm shaking my head over here at the synchronicity in what you're talking about. First of all, I wore a large red flower in my hair this Sunday and thought of you. Secondly, I saw my very first Mad Men episode this evening when my daughter came to spend the night with us. I'd been wanting to see it, so she pulled it up on her laptop, and I spent a lovely hour or so watching a few episodes. Very cool. I never watch TV so in some ways I'm probably culturally deprived, or at least very uninformed. Ditto with the news. I'm happier when I'm not catching every tidbit of scandal and gloom and doom. Perhaps I was an ostrich in a former life.

I love your beautiful maxi dress and see why it's one of your favorites. Littlest is wise beyond her years. She must get it from you because you are wise to recognize her wisdom. Some parents don't.

Love you!!!!!! Thank you for inspiring me to put that flower in my hair!!!!

The party looks fabulous fun. I love your 105-s dress.
What the F*** is for tea is my most oft asked questioned.
I must get this parenting thing sussed before the children leave home.

OMG you look divine and your daughters comment made me laugh so loudly even my husband came in to see what was up! I did the 'trying to tell somebody the funny joke through laughter tears while they look at you like a crazy!' so so funny! your dress is gorgeous....so thrilled you linked up again! what a beautiful addition to my linkup xxxxx

Beautiful dress as always. Your youngest is a gift. Wise words indeed. :)

So pleased the party was a success and more importantly...there was plenty of booze. This dress is gorgeous, I do like a square neckline they are so flattering, and I love the flower in your hair.(Think I'll drag mine out for the gig tonight.) Wise words indeed from Littlest she must get it from her mum eh? Perhaps she'll grow up to be a counsellor. The garden is looking delicious and so are those strawberries, there'll be more Eton Mess soon methinks.

I love this maxi so much. The colours and style are beautiful. The mad men party looks like great fun, any opportunity to dress up is fun in my book. Sometimes it's better to enjoy the fun than photograph it. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Littlest sounds hilarious. You look beautiful in your 50s dress and fascinator. Square necklines are great. I think they look good on almost everyone.

What a great theme for a party - the dresses are amazing! I say rude things in my head when people are nasty to me - I'm too polite to say them out loud!

I think it's great that you wear your seventies (?) dresses with bell sleeves, and don't remodel them like a blogger I read did recently. And you're sharing your wardrobe with your friends too.

that Mad Men themed party sounds delightful!, and blurry photos are a secondary effect of über fun and bloody mary!, hurrah for that!
Your maxi dress is absolutely fabulous, it has the perfect shape and perfect print and fits you like a dream, what else?
Lovely Littlest is such a talented girl, ready to rock the world with her sharp mind!

You have the best eye, and best figure, for a gypsy maxi dress my dear! Love the pictures from the mad men party, and how sweet is your littlest.

Vix said...

I still haven't seen Mad Men, I really ought to be chucked out of the vintage club, shouldn't I?
The girls look fantastic in your frocks and I know you would have looked incredible in the one you chose.
I love that square necked maxi on you, no wonder it's one of your favourites. Even Charlie's eyeing you up in it.
Littlest is supremely wise. I love what she says about why people say mean things, it's taken me years to realise that.
What the fuck did you have for tea? We dialled a curry as we've left our ability to think somewhere in a field in Somerset! xxxxxxx

I've always wanted to host/go to a Mad Men party. Lucky you!

You and flutter sleeves were made for each other. I love everything about that maxi as well.
You're so lucky to have friends who like to dress up, too.

I'm one of those who never watched mad man but I know it's great, I know it mostly because of the fashion, so to have a themed party seems a very original idea!! I hope your daughter will publish a poetry book sooner or later, her last quote is brilliant too and it's lovely that you used it as your post title! You look amazing in your new maxi dress!

I am loving the mad men themed party, how cool, is that! The dresses you loaned out are beauties, but I am really digging the one your wore!

Sometimes being a bad blogger is ok because it means your more in the moment. It happens. Your kid stories I can't get enough of, I may not have children but I do like hearing about them, the good, the bad and the hilarious. I think your girls have a edge because they have you as their Mum. Your cool Curtise;)

If we only knew what other people said in their head, no thank you. Give that girl of yours a hug for me, she is oh so wise!

You have such a lovely garden and you are quite the blossom in your maxi!!
The party looked AMAZING--so much FUN!

Your littlest is just a sweet sweet dearie. Do you think that maybe she has a special insight to others due to her struggles with the skin condition?

My most honest self is alive and well and in my head! I've been dealing with Facebook trolls who are bent on damaging my business with petty carping (with no merit) and you cannot imagine the hateful things I've been thinking! Or maybe you can ...
I just love your kids. I know they come by it honestly.
You look beautiful in all circumstances here. Red just plays beautifully on your admirable frame! I gotta get over to the Flight Platform, but the stupid week has set me back. Working on our new pub website, and it goes slow.
Have a fabulous week, Our Curtise ... you always make a difference in mine.

I say it in my head!! That is the best thing I have ever heard. Bless her! And then to understand why people are mean. She's incredible. Wonderful. Adorable.

I'm not surprised you always feel great in that dress. You certainly look it. It's seriously fabulous. The sleeves, the colours, the fit, the neckline, just glorious. Glad your party was a blast. Your friends look like great fun. Are they the ones from the park incident? You know, who led you astray? ;) xxxxx

Fantastic collection of frocks at the Mad Men party - sounds fun!
Love your maxi too. The colours really suit you.
I have just been for a few days in Derbyshire & didn't take a single photo so I sympathise with your lack of photos xxx

another beautiful serene photoshoot - obviously the what the fuck's for dinner turmoil is going on inside your head but we can't see it. You just look like you're floating around your beautiful garden without a care in the world. Nina is very wise indeed, I'm glad you're preserving all her various philosophical outpourings, maybe we need a Nina quote every now and then? xxxxx

Another spectacular Maxi! I would love to have a rummage in your closet (and that's not code for anything). I wonder if Littlest is perhaps more sensitive and emotionally mature because of having to deal with her skin condition? Her comment about people who say mean things is dead on.

I'd love to go to a Mad Men themed party, but I would want to go as Joan, and I don't have the figure for it...

Ooh this party looks so FUN!

I love seeing other women in your frocks too - it's great to see how different they look, and how perfect they can be on everybody.

I LOVE you in the 50s frock - could you recreate the outfit for us? Say yes. I'm feeling bossy.

The maxi is one of my faves - the colours are so wonderful on you. And I love the pic with the cheeky kitty balancing behind you.

Love you more than maxis. nearly.
